Fairview High School Student Advances to Provincial Skills Canada Competition

Eleven students from Peace River School Division competed in the 2016 North West Regional Skills Canada Alberta Competition on Friday, April 22, 2016. Students from Fairview High School, Fairview and Area Learning Store and Hines Creek Composite School entered in competitions specific to their trade or technology skill and showcased their abilities while competing against students from other schools in the region. The event was held in shops and classrooms at GPRC’s Fairview Campus, Fairview High School and St. Thomas More School.

Congratulations to all those who participated and demonstrated their skills, and to Daniel Wieben, from Fairview High School, who will be advancing to the Alberta Provincial Skills Canada Competition after placing second in Auto Service. A full listing of competition results can be found here.

Skills Canada Alberta was established in 1992 as the provincial chapter of the national Skills Canada Association. The goal of the competition is to encourage students to pursue trade and technical careers and prepare them for the always evolving landscape of a job market that values skilled and trained workers. The program is targeted at junior/senior high and post-secondary students who compete in categories such as Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Graphic Design, Hairstyling, Welding and TV/Video Production among several others.

“This competition is so valuable because it introduces our junior and senior high school students to some of the post-secondary options that would be available to them should they choose to pursue their trade” says PRSD Board Chairman Darren Kuester. “There is always a demand for trained, certified and skilled workers in technology and trade based careers and this competition can really show students the value in getting that training while providing them with a link to potential education and employment opportunities.”

The provincial Skills Canada Competition takes place May 11-12, 2016 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. Students who place first in their competition at the provincial level will compete at the Skills Canada National Competition held in Moncton.

As a proud sponsor of this event Peace River School Division wishes to extend thanks to the other sponsors and the many volunteer organizers and judges who work together to provide this great opportunity for students.
